Botox cosmetic treatments use a much weakened form of the botulism bacteria to help reverse the lines and grooves on our faces that occur naturally as we age. Botox, short for botulism toxin, works on wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles. Wrinkles are formed when we contract our facial muscles; squinting, frowning, and smoking are the most common cause of facial wrinkles. For example, paralyzing the muscles just under the skin on your forehead prohibits you from knitting your eyebrows together, or lifting them; the movements that cause the furrows in your forehead. The wrinkles are not really gone; you just cannot make the movements to show them. The effects of Botox injections are far from permanent. If you plan on keeping the wrinkle free look, you will need to have the treatments on a continual basis, anywhere from every three to eight months. The treatments are not cheap. The average cost per treatment runs around $600.00. There can be some pretty serious side effects from the treatment as well. Although it is a very small dosage of the toxin, there is the possibility of death. You should be aware of any warning signs that something is wrong and seek medical attention immediately.
